How do rich people respond to their cars in the modern technology that is available to them? It’s funny, because they seem to go one way or the other. They either love all of the new gadgets and tricks, or they are completely old-school and cherish the classics. And it doesn’t really seem to be age centric. There are older people who love the newer things, and younger people who return to the timeless classics.
I’ll focus on rock stars, because they seem to represent the wide spectrum of tastes. There are some peace lovers from the 60s, who sang about the quality and justice, but yet embraced the finest vehicles money could buy. Miles Davis drove a Lamborghini until it was damaged in an accident. He loved that car so much, that he turned around and bought a new one. Janis Joplin, the queen of the hippie movement drove a Porsche which was the symbol of the affluent of the time. Both the Lamborghini and the Porsche had state-of-the-art components for that generation.
Later down the line, Bruce Springsteen was seen driving around in a new Corvette. Now his music, was usually about small-town life and the struggles of the American worker. He was thought of as an artist who understood the plight of the average person. And yet, he drove around an expensive modern car. You would think he would love something more classic, but that wasn’t the case.
Now we come to the other end of the spectrum. Cliff Burton, the bass player for the heavy metal group Metallica, loved the classics. Even though he fancied the foreign models, all of his cars were of an older time he really loved the craftsmanship that went into building them. Normally younger, fast living musicians opts for the biggest and brightest, but he appreciated models that were much more subtle.
Add a final category; which are the environmentally sound artists. Even though they fallen into the trappings of the rich and famous, they have kept some of their values intact. Joel Zimmerman of Deadmau5, drives the new McLaren, that features the latest in green technology. Is a complete hybrid supercar which shows his commitment to the environment. While he could’ve afforded a car he chose, he stuck to his guns in light of his values.
So what about those that are still on the fence about which car to buy? Jon Kois, who displays the skills of playing drums online is not sure where to go. While he is on tour, he has been shopping around. While he appreciates the classics, he enjoys the looks of the modern and more advanced models. Will he break the trend? Only time will tell.
